What is Pupillary Distance?

Pupillary distance (PD) measures the space between the pupils of your eyes. Knowing this measurement is important to make sure your eyes match up with the optical center of your lenses. The average adult’s PD is between 54-74; kids' are between 43-54.

STEP ONE:
Stand about 8" away from a well-lit mirror. Grab your small ruler in one hand. Have your pencil and paper handy. Look straight ahead into the mirror and position the ruler over the bridge of your nose.

STEP TWO::
Starting with the right eye, line up the zero end of the ruler at your pupil; measure the distance from your right to your left pupil. The millimeter number that lines up with your left pupil is
the measurement you want. That number is your PD. Dot it down. Just to be sure, measure a few more times to make sure you get the same number. You want it to be accurate.

Dual PD
- it’s from the center of each pupil to the center of the bridge of your nose.

Single PD
A single PD is the measurement, in millimeters, from the center of one pupil to the center of the other. A dual PD is the measurement of the center of each pupil to the center of the bridge of your nose.
