"Moisture-wicking," "breathable," "four-way stretch" — activewear labels are full of terms that sound self-explanatory but describe genuinely different engineering. Understanding what they mean helps you choose fabric suited to what you're actually doing, rather than whichever label sounds most technical.
Moisture-Wicking: It's About Movement, Not Absorption
Cotton absorbs sweat and holds onto it, which is exactly why it feels heavy and clammy during exercise. Moisture-wicking synthetics like polyester and nylon blends work the opposite way — they pull moisture away from the skin and spread it across the fabric's outer surface where it can evaporate quickly. The fabric isn't repelling sweat; it's actively transporting it away from your body.
Breathability: Where Weave Matters as Much as Fibre
Two fabrics with identical fibre content can breathe very differently depending on how they're knitted. Looser, more open knits allow greater airflow, while denser knits trade some breathability for compression and support. Neither is universally better — a compression legging and a loose training tee are solving different problems by design.
Stretch and Recovery: Not the Same Thing
A fabric can stretch generously but recover poorly, meaning it loses shape after repeated wear and washing. Genuine four-way stretch fabric — engineered to move and snap back in both directions — is what keeps activewear fitting the same after fifty wears as it did on day one. This is usually where cheaper activewear fails first.
